Avril Lavigne Wants $2 Million From YouTube

Avril Lavigne Wants $2 Million From YouTube

Avril Lavigne is looking for a $2 million payday from YouTube since her video "Girlfriend" is the site’s most-viewed video of all-time.  Just one catch – the play count was inflated artificially by members of the Avril Bandaids fan site which, of course, hardly seems fair.  The video has been watched more than 92 million times but it’s not clear how much of this was from people actually searching out and watching the clip versus what has resulted from the manual manipulation of Avril fans.
YouTube’s current policy is to remove videos from their "most-played" section if it looks like that …read more

Sum 41 – "In Too Deep" Video

It’s not a new song or anything but I had read an article about Avril Lavigne which made me think of her husband, Deryck Whibley, and, for whatever reason, I started humming "In too Deep."  The song is from their debut album (2001) All Killer No Filler.  Here’s the video – it’s pretty funny if you enjoy watching a punk rock band compete in a diving competition:

Feist To Appear on Sesame Street Premiere

Canadian music sensation, Feist, will be performing a special version of her mega hit “1234“  on Sesame Street for the August 11 season premiere of the show.  Of course, it has to do with counting and monsters   Here’s the cute video:

Manafest "So Beautiful" – Video

Manafest "So Beautiful" – Video

I really wanted to like Manafest since there is a real absence of rappers coming out of Canada (he’s actually a Christian rapper) but I’m not sure that I’m sold from his new song “So Beautiful.”  I can’t put my finger on the two songs that this sounds like but it just doesn’t sound too original (in fact, it sounds a lot like a cleaned up version of Linkin’ Park).  I’m going to give him a chance since I’m not too familiar with him but I don’t like this song.

Garou "Heaven’s Table" – Video

Garou "Heaven’s Table" – Video

You may not have heard of Quebecois singer, Garou, but I’m originally from Montreal where he’s super popular and then, of course, you could know him from his role in Notre-Dame de Paris (he was Quasimodo).  He’s put his signature smoky vocals to an English-language track called “Heaven’s Table” and I really like it.  The lyrics are great (it’s all about people overcoming difficult times) and I think the tune is a good match for his voice.  Check it out:

Sloan "Believe in Me" – Video

Sloan "Believe in Me" – Video

Sloan’s “Believe in Me” from their album Parallel Play is a real throw back to classic rock (anybody think the guitar chords kind of sound like the melody for “Satisfaction?”).  Even the video makes me feel like I’m back in the 80s eating a Fruit Roll Up and watching a video while I wait for Mr. Dress Up to come on.  Good thing I really loved the cheesy ass music and videos from that time because I think this video is super cool.

Barenaked Ladies Singer Arrested For Drugs

Barenaked Ladies Singer Arrested For Drugs

I am totally shocked (and slightly appalled and saddened) by the news that Barenaked Ladies lead singer, Steven Page, has been arrested for drug possession in New York state.  He apparently was found with cocaine and marijuana alongside two women!
His agent is said to be confident that he’ll be cleared.  I certainly hope so.  He will make his first court appearance on July 17, 2008.
Well, may as well watch a BNL video since I’m talking about them.  Here’s “One Week:”

Alanis Morissette Sings "Underneath" Live

Alanis Morissette Sings "Underneath" Live

Alanis Morissette is definitely one of my favorite Canadian artists.  She says that the song is inspired by her desire to make people more compassionate and loving in hopes of changing the world (yeah, it sounds cheesy but it’s cool so whatever) rather than focusing on the “symptoms” of global issues.
The lyrics are good and demonstrate that sometimes the wars we create at home and in our own backyards are just are hurtful as the ones we wage with other nations.

Read the lyrics after the jump!

Wintersleep "Oblivion" – Video

Wintersleep "Oblivion" – Video

I’m kind of digging “Oblivion,” the latest track from their current album “Welcome to the Night Sky” from Halifax-based indie-rock band, Wintersleep.  The way he pronounces “oblivion” threw me a bit at first (it could almost sound like he’s saying “up live beyond”) but it’s part of the charm.  There isn’t a whole lot of singing in it but the tune is great.  Watch the video:

Celine Dion "Eyes on Me" – Video

Celine Dion "Eyes on Me" – Video

Have you heard Celine Dion’s song “Eyes on Me?”  It’s from her new album “Taking Chances” and I’m not a huge fan.  It’s got a Middle Eastern or East Indian feel to it which I normally like but it’s not working for me with her voice.  The video is schmaltzy too.  It’s just a collection of clips from her touring the world and I just would have liked more of an effort from someone who is on the comeback trail.  Oh well.  Check it out for yourself:
