The Trews Left Me "Yearning" at Stampede
I went to see The Trews perform last night at the Calgary Stampede and I was completely impressed by them. The crowd was… happy by the time they took the stage. I spotted empty bottles of Smirnoff and Captain Morgan all over the place which resulted in, if you can imagine, what felt like a barroom atmosphere in the open air. Very weird… There were many body surfers being passed around – one guy even had a lit lighter going as he coasted over people’s heads. People were digging the show, though, and that’s all that seemed to matter to The Trews.
They kicked things off with an energetic rendition of “Not Ready to Go” and followed with hits like “So She’s Leaving” and “Paranoid Freak.” However, my favorite performance of the night was “Yearning.” Maybe it’s because I just love that song in general but I also was so impressed by how they managed to stay true to the original but breathe new life into it by breaking it down, making it seem like the song was over and then returning with some truly awesome guitar work until, finally, the rest of the band kicked in and sang the chorus. It was really good.
For those of you who don’t know the band, they hail from Antigonish, Nova Scotia and consist of Colin MacDonald (vocalist), John-Angus MacDonald (guitar), Jack Syperek (bass) and Sean Dalton (drums).
