Hockey Night in Canada Theme Challenge

Hockey Night in Canada Theme Challenge

After CBC lost the Hockey Night in Canada theme to CTV (honestly, it completely broke my heart – it’s like our country’s second national anthem!), they created the “Hockey Anthem Challenge” in hopes of finding the next great theme song.  Have you entered a song or found a favorite?  If so, I want to hear about it!
In the meantime, here’s a tune I heard that was submitted by Montreal’s David Makin.  What do you think of it?:

Canadian Music Pioneers: Geraldine Hunt

Canadian Music Pioneers: Geraldine Hunt

Each Wednesday, I’m planning to discuss a pioneer in Canadian music.  This week, I’ve selected Geraldine Hunt.  You may remember her best from the track “Can’t Fake the Feeling” which stayed at the #1 spot on Billboard for seven weeks in 1980!  It’s funky and filled with hot guitar-licks and is basically everything you want a great disco track to be!  Don’t let me forget the lyrics!  My favorite line?  “You’re not feelin’ what I’m feelin’ when I’m feelin’ you.”  Doesn’t get much hotter than that!  Watch her performance on Solid Gold now:

Is Canadian Music in Danger?

Is Canadian Music in Danger?

I have been reading reports about the federal government cutting $20-million in funding to the DFAIT administered program PromArt (Promotional Arts) and the Department of Canadian Heritage administered program Trade Routes.
The cuts are supposed to take place on March 31, 2009.
I think that, if this goes through, it would be on of the worst things that could happen to our country’s musicians!  It’s bad enough that they are already leaving here and reinventing themselves in the American market (yes, I’m talking to the Barenaked Ladies, Nelly Furtado and Avril Lavigne).  It’s extremely frustrating and actually pretty sad.

Barenaked Ladies’ Ed Robertson Survives Plane Crash

Barenaked Ladies’ Ed Robertson Survives Plane Crash

WOW!  What a summer for the Barenaked Ladies!  First, frontman Steven Page gets arrested for drug possesion and now this!
Ed Robertson was in a float-plane crash in southeastern Ontario!  He and three others survived after the craft plummeted into trees.  According to the Ontario police, the plane lost speed on take off and went into the trees on the west side of Baptiste Lake.  I don’t know if he was actually flying the plane but I do know that he got his pilot’s license back in 2005.
The ironic part is that he’s on that show that follows his travels …read more

Avril Lavigne’s "Abbey Dawn" Clothing Line

Avril Lavigne’s "Abbey Dawn" Clothing Line

I’m not even sure what I think about this.  I blogged about Avril Lavigne’s clothing line “Abbey Dawn” last month and was pretty neutral, I guess, but now I’m just annoyed.  Does everyone have to have a clothing line?  Does Avril really need one?  Do you think people actually want to contribute to the world or are they just making these clothes to make money?
Anyway, here’s a video of her talking about it:

Avril Lavigne Concert Deemed "Too Sexy"

Avril Lavigne Concert Deemed "Too Sexy"

Avril Lavigne’s on-stage dance moves are not sitting well with Malaysia’s Islamic opposition party.  They are so disturbed by it that they have asked the government to cancel her upcoming concert (set for August 29th in Kuala Lumpur).  Apparently, the Canadian punk princess is “too sexy” for them.
The department is expected to meet sometime today to decide whether the show will go on.
Well, it’s not the first time this type of thing has happened.  Gwen Stefani was forced to make a “major sacrifice” by changing her wardrobe to reveal less skin during her performances and Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé …read more

Sarah McLachlan at BC 150 Festival

Doesn’t Sarah McLachlan look beautiful at the BC 150 Festival???  I just love her!  Haven’t seen enough of her lately, though.  Again, I didn’t get to go to the event but I heard she was great!  Check out these pictures!

Feist at the BC 150 Festival – Pics and Video

Feist at the BC 150 Festival – Pics and Video

Canadian singer, Feist, was at the BC 150 Festival earlier this month and I was fortunate enough to have a friend who attended and gave me some pictures (click on any of them to enlarge).
Did any of you have a chance to go?  I was in California at the time (plus I live in Calgary and this was in Victoria) so I didn’t attend any of the festivities.

Here is a short video of some of her performance:

Belly ft. Ginuwine "Pressure" – Video

Belly ft. Ginuwine "Pressure" – Video

Belly joined together with Ginuwine for this song, “Pressure” off of Belly’s 2007 album, “The Revolution.” The song peaked at #10 on the Canadian Hot 100 Chart.  I’m not a huge fan of this song, but I can see why it got popular in Canada. The song changes drastically at about 3:25. I almost thought it was a different song. Watch the video below!

American Idol’s Brooke White Covers Feist

American Idol’s Brooke White Covers Feist

Brooke White, who is most famous for being a finalist during this past season of American Idol covered Canadian singer, Feist’s famous song “1234″ recently.  It’s a great fit for her voice, I think.  Watch the video:
