Brian Melo Returns to Canadian Idol

Brian Melo Returns to Canadian Idol

Last year’s Canadian Idol winner, Brian Melo, made an appearance on the finale tonight where he performed his single “Wish You Well.”  It was good – I wasn’t jumping out of my seat – but I guess I’m also just not a huge fan of the song.  It’s not musical or challenging enough to really showcase Brian’s talent.

Watch his performance of “Wish You Well” here and tell me what you think:

Canadian Music Pioneers: Anne Murray

Canadian Music Pioneers: Anne Murray

It’s impossible to talk about the pioneers in Canadian music without mentioning Anne Murray.  The mega talented singer/songwriter, who is originally from Nova Scotia, helped paved the way for female singers from our great nation.  She was the first Canadian woman to earn a gold record and reach #1 on the U.S. charts with her 1970 hit song "Snowbird."  She was also the first person from Canada (male or female) to win "Album of the Year" at the Country Music Association Awards (she took home the prize for 1984’s A Little Good News).  To-date, her albums have sold over 54 …read more

Theory of a Deadman "Bad Girlfriend" – Video

Have you heard this song by Theory of a Deadman?  It’s called “Bad Girlfriend” and the lyrics are pretty hilarious.  It’s not as macabre as their video for “So Happy.”  In fact, in comparison, this one almost seems low-budget but it does the trick.  The girlfriend truly does seem pretty nasty and bad, lol.

Justin Nozuka "Be Back Soon" – Video

Justin Nozuka "Be Back Soon" – Video

I hadn’t heard of Justin Nozuka until I came across the video for his single “Be Back Soon” (from his 2007 debut album Holly) but I really like him.  Some of the chords in the tune are not the most original but he’s got a lot more soul and grit than I was expecting out of a 19-year-old Canadian.
Here are some fun facts about Justin:

His brother is Canadian r&b singer George
His other brother, Philip Nozuka, played Chester on Degrassi: the Next Generation
His mother, Holly, is the sister of Hollywood actress Kyra Sedgwick who is married to actor Kevin …read more

Flashback Friday – "Hero" by Nickelback

Flashback Friday – "Hero" by Nickelback

For today’s Flashback Friday, I’ve chosen the 2002 single “Hero” by Alberta-grown group, Nickelback featuring Josey Scott (lead vocalist of Saliva) from the Spider-Man soundtrack.  I really think this might have been the best theme song for the film franchise to-date and I love the part towards the end where the music breaks down and it’s basically them and their guitars.

Kardinal Offishall feat. The Clipse "Set it Off"

Kardinal Offishall feat. The Clipse "Set it Off"

Hells yeah!  This song is off the hook!  Have you heard “Set it Off” by Kardinal Offishall feat. The Clipse?  He is proof that rap and hip-hop is alive and well (and thriving) here in Canada.  It’s the second release from his album “Not 4 Sale” (the first was the equally infectious hit “Dangerous” feat. Akon).

IllScarlett "Who’s Got It?" – Video

IllScarlett "Who’s Got It?" – Video

“Who’s Got It?” is Canadian reggae/punk/rock/ska group, IllScarlett’s third release from their All Day With It album which was released last summer.  They were nominated this past year at both the 2008 MuchMusic Video Awards (Best Video, Best Rock Video, Best Post-Production, and Best Director for “Nothing Special” and People’s Choice: Favourite Canadian Group) and the 2008 Juno Awards (New Group of the Year).
The song is pretty cool (do they remind you of No Doubt in their earlier years but, obviously, with a male voice as the lead).  The video is cheesy and cheap as hell but somehow it works.  …read more

Brian Melo "Summertime" – Video

Brian Melo "Summertime" – Video

This video for Canadian Idol winner, Brian Melo’s track “Summertime” cracked me up!!!  He’s just got his iPod on and he’s standing in the middle of the street (in major traffic!!!) looking like a crazy person.  He seriously looks like he’s absolutely lost his freaking mind, lol.  I love it!!!  He’s got some guts, let me tell you, because there is no way I would risk standing where he is.  Hilarious.  Can you imagine being one of those drivers?  LOL.
