Flashback Friday – Jann Arden "Insensitive"

Flashback Friday – Jann Arden "Insensitive"

I was in my final year of high school (1995) when I first heard Jann Arden’s song “Insensitive.”  I liked it but I loved her voice more than anything.  I decided to go out and buy the album Living Under June and I was hooked.  I loved it so much that it is one of the very few albums I brought with me for my road trip across Canada this week.

While “Insensitive” is probably the most recognizable track from the album, my favorite song is “Good Mother.”  There is no official video for it but you can listen to …read more

Jully Black to Appear in "Saving God"

Jully Black to Appear in "Saving God"

Canadian soul singer (and Juno Award winner and Canadian Idol correspondent), Jully Black will be appearing in a new movie called “Saving God.”   The film is going to deal with the issues surrounding gangs and will demonstrate a “heart-felt tale of the eternal struggle between good and evil” and will seek to show that “no one is beyond redemption.”
It sounds perfect for Jully who many may know has a deep belief in God.  how exciting!

David Usher "Kill the Lights" – Video

David Usher "Kill the Lights" – Video

As I continue my cross-country trip, I’ve been reflecting on some of my favorite Canadian music/musicians.  One person who came to mind is David Usher who, it seems, I’ve liked forever.  First he was in Moists back in 1992 and I will forever associate the album “Silver” (it went quadruple platinum) with certain events during my high school years and then he went solo with songs like “Alone in the Universe” and “Black, Black Heart.”
His newest album “Wake Up and Say Goodbye” (2008) features the single I’m about to share with you.  Check out “Kill the Lights.”  It’s not …read more

Canadian Music Legends: Ginette Reno

Canadian Music Legends: Ginette Reno

Growing up in Quebec, I knew all about Ginette Reno and her incredibly powerful voice.  Whether it be a new release on the charts or her take on Christmas classics, she was very much a part of my life.
A native of Montreal, Reno released her first album at the age of 16 in 1962.  Since then, she has released more than five dozen albums and has earned countless awards, including three Juno Awards.  When she was just 36, she became the youngest person to ever be named to the Order of Canada and in the year 2000, she was …read more

Sam Roberts "Detroit ‘67" – Video

Sam Roberts "Detroit ‘67" – Video

This Sam Roberts song, “Detroit ‘67,” is all rock-n-roll piano and I love it.  It really is a throw back to the era and he even sounds a bit like (dare I say) Billy Joel at times.  Having lived in Detroit for a period of time, I know how much musical history lives in that city and I think it’s cool that a crazy Canuck like Roberts thought to pay tribute.  It’s really different from his “Brother Down” which was the first I’d heard of him.

Matt Mays & El Torpedo "Tall Trees" – Video

I have to admit that I didn’t have high hopes for “Tall Trees” by Matt Mays and El Torpedo but I was pleasantly surprised.  It kind of reminds me in some ways of an old Tom Petty song and, well, I kinda dig Tom Petty.

Lights "Drive My Soul" – Video

Lights "Drive My Soul" – Video

Uhhh… I don’t know what to make of the song “Drive My Soul” by Lights – one second I’m utterly appalled and then in the next minute, I’m actually appreciating some of it.  Ugh.  It’s got a real 80s vibe to it at times, then it feels like a 90s tune and then, again, it feels modern.  It’s the weirdest thing.
I also don’t “get” the song which asks “who will drive my soul?” since “somebody put out the moon.”  Um, okay… The saving grace for me is that I’ve just finished reading the Twilight Series of books by Stephanie Meyer …read more

The Trews "Paranoid Freak" – Video

The Trews "Paranoid Freak" – Video

I’m on a cross-country trek this week (I am currently in Toronto, heading to Montreal and then driving back to Calgary) so it’s mostly going to be videos for the next little while.
I came across this video for “Paranoid Freak” by The Trews and it made me smile.  I saw them perform this song at the Calgary Stampede and I liked it right away.  Mind you, my favorite of their songs is probably always going to be “Yearning” but this is a good follow-up.  The video is a little lame, though.
