Canadian Music Pioneers: Anne Murray
It’s impossible to talk about the pioneers in Canadian music without mentioning Anne Murray. The mega talented singer/songwriter, who is originally from Nova Scotia, helped paved the way for female singers from our great nation. She was the first Canadian woman to earn a gold record and reach #1 on the U.S. charts with her 1970 hit song "Snowbird." She was also the first person from Canada (male or female) to win "Album of the Year" at the Country Music Association Awards (she took home the prize for 1984’s A Little Good News). To-date, her albums have sold over 54 million copies. As if that’s not enough, Golf For Women magazine named her the "world’s best female golfer" last year (she got an 11 handicap!).
In honor of Anne Murray, here’s a video of her singing "Snowbird"
