Die Mannequin "Saved by Strangers" – Video

Die Mannequin "Saved by Strangers" – Video

I have to admit that Toronto-based punk rock group, Die Mannequin, is not my style but I know there are Canadians out there who love them.  It’s not their genre that I dislike but I think that their songs, like “Saved by Strangers,” are just really plain.  Anyway, the track originally came from their 2007 EP Slaughter Daughter which was eventually absorbed (along with their 2006 EP How to Kill) into a single album, Unicorn Steak, what was released this year.

I just think that they try too hard to sound “punk” and it comes off seeming cheesy.  In case …read more

Canadians Pay Tribute to John Lennon

Canadians Pay Tribute to John Lennon

Canadian singers, Nelly Furtado, Alanis Morissette and Rufus Wainwright are appearing on a tribute DVD called “Come Together: A Night for John Lennon’s Words & Music” to pay respect to the former Beatle.  It was filmed back in 2001, just weeks after the horrific September 11 terrorist attacks and proceeds from the event, which was filmed at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, were donated to the recovery efforts.
The artists were allowed to interpret a Lennon song in any way that they chose – Nelly Furtado sang “Instant Karma with Dave Stewart, Alanis performed “Dear Prudence” and …read more

Barenaked Ladies December Tour Dates

Barenaked Ladies December Tour Dates

The Barenaked Ladies are ready to get back on the road after having to take a break when frontman, Steven Page, was arrested on drug charges this past July (he is set to appear in court on October 28, 2008).  They have now announced two children’s shows and three “Barenaked for the Holidays” concerts.  I love their covers on traditional Christmas carols so I wish I could go to one of those “Holiday” shows.
In case you are scratching your head over why BNL is doing kids’ shows (as I was when I heard about it a little while …read more

Hedley "Never Too Late" – Video

Hedley "Never Too Late" – Video

This video by Hedley for their single "Never Too Late" is pure cheesiness at it’s best.  It’s clearly a play on the video for Duran Duran’s 80s classic hit "Rio."  For fun, I’ve included both videos so you can compare.

Duran Duran’s "Rio" is almost as cheesy.  It was the original and is pretty typical compared to the videos of its’ time so it gets more forgiveness

The song has got a faux-reggae feel and former Canadian Idol finalist, Jacob Hoggard, seems completely in his element.  This isn’t my favourite song of theirs but it’s fun.

Avril Lavigne and Deryck Whibley Divorcing?

Avril Lavigne and Deryck Whibley Divorcing?

Are Canada’s hottest young couple calling it quits? That’s what reports are saying.  The two have been married for 2 years now and I actually thought they might be an example of young Hollywood getting married really early in life but who were so right for each other, it didn’t matter.  I hope they can work it out.  Can you imagine what their kids would be like!?
Oh well.  In the meantime, here’s a video montage of their wedding photos.

Matt Mays & El Torpedo "Tall Trees" – Video

Matt Mays & El Torpedo "Tall Trees" – Video

I have to admit that I didn’t have high hopes for “Tall Trees” by Matt Mays and El Torpedo but I was pleasantly surprised.  It kind of reminds me in some ways of an old Tom Petty song and, well, I kinda dig Tom Petty.

Lights "Drive My Soul" – Video

Lights "Drive My Soul" – Video

Uhhh… I don’t know what to make of the song “Drive My Soul” by Lights – one second I’m utterly appalled and then in the next minute, I’m actually appreciating some of it.  Ugh.  It’s got a real 80s vibe to it at times, then it feels like a 90s tune and then, again, it feels modern.  It’s the weirdest thing.
I also don’t “get” the song which asks “who will drive my soul?” since “somebody put out the moon.”  Um, okay… The saving grace for me is that I’ve just finished reading the Twilight Series of books by Stephanie Meyer …read more

The Trews "Paranoid Freak" – Video

The Trews "Paranoid Freak" – Video

I’m on a cross-country trek this week (I am currently in Toronto, heading to Montreal and then driving back to Calgary) so it’s mostly going to be videos for the next little while.
I came across this video for “Paranoid Freak” by The Trews and it made me smile.  I saw them perform this song at the Calgary Stampede and I liked it right away.  Mind you, my favorite of their songs is probably always going to be “Yearning” but this is a good follow-up.  The video is a little lame, though.

Mobile – "The Killer" Video

Mobile – "The Killer" Video

Okay, I’ve got to admit that I am not really familiar with the Canadian group, Mobile, so I kinda looked at the pictures of them and assumed what I thought they were going to sound like.  Was I ever completely off-base!
The Montreal band is made up of Mat Joly (vocals), Christian Brais (guitar), Pierre-Marc Hamelin (drums), Dominic Viola (bass) and Frank Williamson (guitar).  They put some effort into their video for "The Killer" and the tune really reminds me of Billy Idol in some ways.  I really like it!
