BC’s Festival 150 Birthday Celebration

BC’s Festival 150 Birthday Celebration

From August 1st-4th, British Columbia will be celebrating their 150th birthday and they have gone all out with the festivities!
Some of Canada’s top acts, including Feist and Sarah McLachlan, will be there performing in front of the Parliament buildings in Victoria.
I’ve got some friends who are attending (even took a helicopter to get there!) so I’m hoping for some good pictures (hint, hint).
For more information, visit the BC Festival 150 site!

Estelle Performs in Toronto at MLS All-Star Game

Estelle Performs in Toronto at MLS All-Star Game

R&B singer, Estelle, was in Toronto, Ontario this past week for the MLS All-Star game.  It brought out other celebrities including Rachel McAdams and Drew Carey.  Have you ever heard Estelle’s duet “American Boy” with Kanye West.  Click here to watch the video on Hip Hop Roll.  I love the song because it’s really smooth and has a real European influence (she’s French, I believe) but it also has a touch of a Kanye-style hip hop groove.

Jully Black Brings Soul to the Stampede

Jully Black Brings Soul to the Stampede

Jully Black was incredible last night at the Calgary Stampede.  Her show was earlier than most of the “big acts” I’ve seen this week and it was the first non-rock show on the Coca-Cola Stage but it didn’t matter.  Her dedicated audience was there waiting for her well before the show even began.  That was something else that was different also.  While acts like Hedley and Faber Drive and, well, basically every other band this week attracted mostly younger fans, Jully’s crowd consisted of all types of people – young, old, different cultural backgrounds, etc… It was so nice to …read more

Natasha Bedingfield Embraces Western Pride at Stampede

Natasha Bedingfield Embraces Western Pride at Stampede

Natasha Bedingfield was great last night when she stepped on to the Coca-Cola Stage at the Calgary Stampede.  The audience showed some love as she began the set with some lesser-known songs but when she broke into hits like “These Words,” “Unwritten” and the new “Love Like This,” the crowd erupted into cheers.  It was a more subdued concert than I’ve seen all week at the Stampede since, unlike with bands like Finger Eleven and Lifehouse, there was no moshing and certainly no body surfing.  It was a nice change (even though I like the other stuff too).
She was really …read more

Finger Eleven "Paralyzes" Calgary Stampede

Finger Eleven "Paralyzes" Calgary Stampede

Finger Eleven were amazing the other night at the Calgary Stampede.  I had forgotten how much I loved their music and it was a great trip down memory lane.  Lead singer, Scott Anderson, was really incredible – his voice was clear and even better live than recorded.  They gave a kick-ass performance of Paralyzer which, of course, drove the crowd insane.
The only distraction were the body surfers.  Seriously, if you are going to body surf, don’t do it at the Calgary Stampede.  That’s just lame – the crowd isn’t really into it and then people get hurt.  I saw …read more

Lifehouse Brings Life to Calgary Stampede

Lifehouse Brings Life to Calgary Stampede

Lifehouse performed at the Calgary Stampede on July 7th but I didn’t get to attend the actual show.  I sent my photographer so I’ve got a ton of pictures.
Lifehouse is actually an American band based out of Malibu but since they were at the Stampede, I’m putting them up here   If you recognize the name but can’t think of a song, you’ve probably heard of them because of “Hanging By a Moment.”

Hedley Plays Through the Rain at Stampede

Hedley Plays Through the Rain at Stampede

Wow… okay, first of all, let me just say that I wish I had better pictures.  Right before Hedley took to the stage, it started lightning and then it just plain out started pouring.  I had neither an umbrella nor a protective thing for my camera so I had to find a windowed area inside a nearby building and I’m not even going to tell you how bad that was (people were grumpy – let’s leave it at that).
Now for the good news!  Hedley didn’t seem bothered at all by the rain.  In fact, they played right through it …read more

The Trews Left Me "Yearning" at Stampede

The Trews Left Me "Yearning" at Stampede

I went to see The Trews perform last night at the Calgary Stampede and I was completely impressed by them.  The crowd was… happy by the time they took the stage.  I spotted empty bottles of Smirnoff and Captain Morgan all over the place which resulted in, if you can imagine, what felt like a barroom atmosphere in the open air.  Very weird… There were many body surfers being passed around – one guy even had a lit lighter going as he coasted over people’s heads.  People were digging the show, though, and that’s all that seemed to matter …read more
