Canadian Idol Cancelled for 2009 Season

Canadian Idol has been cancelled for 2009. According to the National Post, CTV released the following statement:“as a result of the current economic climate, production of Canadian Idol will rest for the 2009 year.”

Wow! That’s huge news and, of course, a terrible sign for the Canadian economy. I hope it comes back as other Idol shows have done who have taken a year off in the past (Germany, Russia and the Netherlands, for example).

Alanis Morrissette Performs on Rosie Live

Canadian singer, Alanis Morrissette, made an appearance on Rosie Live last night. The show, created by Rosie O’Donnell, was supposed to be a throwback to the old variety shows that we used to love (think Sonny & Cher). I haven’t read one good review and I’m disappointed to say that my PVR didn’t record it and I can’t find many videos online yet.

Apparently, Alanis sang "a song referencing the 12 Steps in front of… an endless loop of geese flying through a sunset." Wow… That sounds very unfortunate (yikes!). If I find a video, I’ll be sure to put it up. In the meantime, here is the promo for the show so you can have a better idea of what it was about.

David Foster and Katharine McPhee on The View

David Foster was on The View earlier this week where he accompanied former American Idol finalist, Katharine McPhee, on the piano as she sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." David, of course, was great but I was not overly impressed with her vocals. I am not completely sure what he sees in her. I think her timing is weird (although, it has improved since her days on Idol), she lacks control and she is just so over-the-top. I like the tone of her voice but that’s really about it.

The pair worked together on David Foster and Friends which is now available on CD/DVD.

Jully Black on Canadian Idol Finale

Jully Black performed her single “Queen” on the Canadian Idol finale last night. She looked absolutely gorgeous! I feel so lucky to have her in the Canadian music industry because we are sorely lacking in terms of having many great soul singers. On the few occasions where I was fortunate enough to be in the same circles with her, she’s always been gracious and acts pretty much the same was she does on television. Can ya tell I love her?

Hockey Night in Canada Theme Challenge

After CBC lost the Hockey Night in Canada theme to CTV (honestly, it completely broke my heart – it’s like our country’s second national anthem!), they created the “Hockey Anthem Challenge” in hopes of finding the next great theme song. Have you entered a song or found a favorite? If so, I want to hear about it!

In the meantime, here’s a tune I heard that was submitted by Montreal’s David Makin. What do you think of it?:

Avril Lavigne Debuts Clothing Line – Video

Canadian punk princess, Avril Lavigne, was on Good Day LA this morning where she showcased her new clothing line “Abbey Dawn.” Basically, the clothes look like stuff she already wears so, if you love Avril Lavigne, or just want to look like her, this stuff is perfect. I like some of it but I’m not a fan of pink leopard print clothes, lol.

Canada’s MTV2 Launches August 1, 2008!

MTV2 will be launching in 6.7 million Canadian homes on August 1, 2008 at 1pm. I love when new channels pop up! There will be a total of 21 new exclusive series premieres including Fist of Zen, Call to Greatness, and Fur TV along with TRL (Total Request Live), Jackass and classics like Beavis and Butthead and Headbanger’s Ball.

The channel will be free for three months on the following channels:

Bell ExpressVu (channel 577), National
Star Choice (channel 590), National
Shaw (channel 98), Alberta and British Columbia
Cogeco (channel 172), Ontario
Rogers (channel 706), Ontario and New Brunswick
Videotron (channel 163), Quebec
Eastlink (channel 170), East Coast

MTV2 is taking over Razer’s channel position, currently available in nearly one million homes.

Feist To Appear on Sesame Street Premiere

Canadian Idol Top 24 Results Show Tonight

The sixth season of Canadian Idol is already underway and it’s off to an interesting start.

For the first time in the show’s history, we have a Top 24 and on Monday we saw the first half of them perform and then last night the other twelve took to the stage. Tonight, we will see who gets eliminated.
