David Usher "Kill the Lights" – Video

David Usher "Kill the Lights" – Video

As I continue my cross-country trip, I’ve been reflecting on some of my favorite Canadian music/musicians.  One person who came to mind is David Usher who, it seems, I’ve liked forever.  First he was in Moists back in 1992 and I will forever associate the album “Silver” (it went quadruple platinum) with certain events during my high school years and then he went solo with songs like “Alone in the Universe” and “Black, Black Heart.”
His newest album “Wake Up and Say Goodbye” (2008) features the single I’m about to share with you.  Check out “Kill the Lights.”  It’s not …read more

Sam Roberts "Detroit ‘67" – Video

Sam Roberts "Detroit ‘67" – Video

This Sam Roberts song, “Detroit ‘67,” is all rock-n-roll piano and I love it.  It really is a throw back to the era and he even sounds a bit like (dare I say) Billy Joel at times.  Having lived in Detroit for a period of time, I know how much musical history lives in that city and I think it’s cool that a crazy Canuck like Roberts thought to pay tribute.  It’s really different from his “Brother Down” which was the first I’d heard of him.

Matt Mays & El Torpedo "Tall Trees" – Video

Matt Mays & El Torpedo "Tall Trees" – Video

I have to admit that I didn’t have high hopes for “Tall Trees” by Matt Mays and El Torpedo but I was pleasantly surprised.  It kind of reminds me in some ways of an old Tom Petty song and, well, I kinda dig Tom Petty.

Lights "Drive My Soul" – Video

Lights "Drive My Soul" – Video

Uhhh… I don’t know what to make of the song “Drive My Soul” by Lights – one second I’m utterly appalled and then in the next minute, I’m actually appreciating some of it.  Ugh.  It’s got a real 80s vibe to it at times, then it feels like a 90s tune and then, again, it feels modern.  It’s the weirdest thing.
I also don’t “get” the song which asks “who will drive my soul?” since “somebody put out the moon.”  Um, okay… The saving grace for me is that I’ve just finished reading the Twilight Series of books by Stephanie Meyer …read more

The Trews "Paranoid Freak" – Video

The Trews "Paranoid Freak" – Video

I’m on a cross-country trek this week (I am currently in Toronto, heading to Montreal and then driving back to Calgary) so it’s mostly going to be videos for the next little while.
I came across this video for “Paranoid Freak” by The Trews and it made me smile.  I saw them perform this song at the Calgary Stampede and I liked it right away.  Mind you, my favorite of their songs is probably always going to be “Yearning” but this is a good follow-up.  The video is a little lame, though.

Charice and Celine Dion Sing Duet – Video

Charice and Celine Dion Sing Duet – Video

The young Filipina girl with the big voice, Charice Pempengco, who recently appeared on Oprah was able to fulfill another amazing dream – she performed with Celine Dion at Madison Square Garden in New York City earlier this month.  They sang “Because You Loved Me” and the crowd went crazy.  Charice was amazing – I got goosebumps!

Serena Ryder "Weak in the Knees" – Video

Serena Ryder "Weak in the Knees" – Video

The song "Weak in the Knees" by Serena Ryder is one of my favorite in Canadian music this past year.  I had the opportunity to meet and mingle with her at the 2008 Juno Awards in Calgary this past April and she was an absolute doll (that’s us at left with Sophie Millman – it’s not the best picture but it was a crazy night).
I also loved with Canadian Idol winner, Theo Tams, covered this song this past season.  He did a great job at capturing the emotion of the words.

Mobile – "The Killer" Video

Mobile – "The Killer" Video

Okay, I’ve got to admit that I am not really familiar with the Canadian group, Mobile, so I kinda looked at the pictures of them and assumed what I thought they were going to sound like.  Was I ever completely off-base!
The Montreal band is made up of Mat Joly (vocals), Christian Brais (guitar), Pierre-Marc Hamelin (drums), Dominic Viola (bass) and Frank Williamson (guitar).  They put some effort into their video for "The Killer" and the tune really reminds me of Billy Idol in some ways.  I really like it!

Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton "Dr. Blind" – Video

Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton "Dr. Blind" – Video

This song, "Dr Blind" by Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton is unique and eerie, not something that comes as a surprise from Emily, lead singer of Metric. The video was a bit creepy for my taste, but regardless, I think there is something to be said for the creativity that some music videos lack, and this video is definitely not lacking.

The Stills "Being Here" – Video

The video below is for "Being Here" by The Stills. The group’s newest album was named after this single’s title and released this year. I like the lyrics to the song and the video is interesting.
