The Black Lungs "Hold Fast (Sink or Swim)"

The Black Lungs is fronted by Wade MacNeil who is also the guitarist for AlexisonFire.  I’m guessing he just wanted a side project to be able to be the lead singer but it hasn’t been the most successful venture - all of the members of the band have quit so, when they tour, Pat Pengelly from Bedouin Soundclash will be playing drums, George Pettit from Alexisonfire will be playing bass, and Haris Cehajic from Moneen will be playing piano.

I have to say that, based on the song “Hold Fast (Sink or Swim),” I’m not terribly impressed.  I really applaude Wade’s effort to try something new but sometimes, guitar players should, well… play guitar.  Watch the video and decide for yourselves:

Celebrate 100th Episode of Video on Trial

video on trial 100th episode

On November 3, 2008, one of my favourite shows, Video on Trial, will air its’ 100th episode on MuchMusic.  There have been times, and I am not even exaggerating, when I was in the worst mood and watching the jurors tear videos to shred just perked me right up (ha ha!).  I was thrilled when, this past April, I was able to meet Trevor Boris at the 2008 Juno Awards.  He was just as sweet and funny as I had hoped.

On the Much site, it describes the episode as follows:

For the first time ever, all your favourite VOT jurors are together and take over the environment (to prove that we do have lower halves and aren’t just floating torsos) for an hour of hate (fun hate), hosted by Trevor Boris. This is your chance to see Debra, Sabrina, Ron, Nikki, etc. do what they do best..judge. You’ll see some of the best and worst moments ever from the show, some never-before-seen moments and we’ll count down to the Greatest Moment ever voted by you, the fans!

I can’t wait!  The show airs at 7pm & 10pm ET.  Don’t miss it!

Fall Out Boy on Much’s Live in the Lot Today!

Fall Out Boy

Today, MuchMusic is launching “Live in the Lot” and they’ve invited Fall Out Boy to help kick things off!  The show, presented by Rogers, will air at 7pm Eastern Time (set your PVRs!).

People in the Greater Toronto Area can join in the fun by heading down to Much headquarters around 5:30pm to watch the show from the street (it’s October in Canada, folks - please dress responsibly!).

If you’ve got a Rogers phone, you can text FOB to 4849 to hook up:
• A reminder to watch the show on Tuesday from your phone or on TV
• Vote for FOB’s encore LIVE as they are performing!
• Hook up ring tunes, wallpapers, and FOB tracks

folie a deux - fall out boyDon’t forget, you can pick up a copy of Fall Out Boy’s new album, “Folie a Deux” on December 16, 2008.

I wonder if bass player, Pete Wentz, will be a father by then…  Last time I saw his wife, Ashlee Simpson (younger sister of Jessica) she looked about ready to pop!  They seem super happy so I’d like to take this quick chance to wish them all the best!

16mm "Darling Democrat" Pokes Fun at American Politics

Wow.  With the U.S. presidential elections just a little more than a week away, I got a real crack out of this weekend that pokes fun at some of the world’s most recognizable politicians.   You’ll see appearances from Barack Obama, John McCain, Hillary Clinton, President Bush and even personalities and stars like Anderson Cooper, David Hasselbeck and Alex Trebek (and many more!).

It’s a good thing the video is so entertaining because it distracts from the repetitive, banal song.  I am hoping that it is just because it is a remix but I have no desire to ever hear this song again - the synthesizers actually grated on my nerves and his vocals verged on boring.  I will, however, re-watch the video.  Check it out!

MTV Live Wins Gemini Award

mtv canada logoMTV LIVE, which is hosted by Daryn Jones (remember him from the hilarious show Buzz?), has been honoured with a Gemini Award for “Best Talk Series.”  The daily talk show offers up a healthy dose of satire while reporting on the news, trends and pop culture.  It was nominated against MTV’s The Hills After Show and CBC’s The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos.

Die Mannequin "Saved by Strangers" - Video

I have to admit that Toronto-based punk rock group, Die Mannequin, is not my style but I know there are Canadians out there who love them.  It’s not their genre that I dislike but I think that their songs, like “Saved by Strangers,” are just really plain.  Anyway, the track originally came from their 2007 EP Slaughter Daughter which was eventually absorbed (along with their 2006 EP How to Kill) into a single album, Unicorn Steak, what was released this year.

I just think that they try too hard to sound “punk” and it comes off seeming cheesy.  In case you aren’t familiar with them, here’s a list of the band’s current members:

Vanessa Hudgens Squealed After Meeting Celine Dion

vanessa-hudgens-nc

High School Musical star, Vanessa Hudgens, apparently was so excited to meet her idol, Canadian (and international) singing superstar, Celine Dion, that the 19-year-old could not contain her emotions.  She recently admitted: “If it wasn’t for Celine Dion I wouldn’t actually be singing. And when I met her she was so sweet and she actually knew me by my first name.  She walked past and said ‘Bye Vanessa’ and I completely freaked out. I was so excited I think I squealed a bit. Looking back I am so embarrassed.”

Awww!  I think that is pretty cute!

Avril Lavigne Featured in Nintendo Wii Game

celebrity sports showdown avril lavigneI love my Nintendo Wii and one of my favorite things to play on the Wii are their sports games.  Whether it’s Wii Sports, Mario and Sonic at the 2008 Beijing Olympics or even just NHL 2K9, I love the action games!

Now, I have heard that a new game called “Celebrity Sports Showdown” is ready to make its’ debut and it features famous people playing a variety of sports.  Our very own Avril Lavigne is featured playing badminton, for example.  Some of the other stars include Keith Urban, Fergie, Paul Pierce and Mia Hamm (I’m guessing she plays volleyball in the game?  Just a guess…).

*update - I hear that Nelly Furtado is also in the game but I’m not sure what she does.  Sounds like a lot of fun!

Canadians Pay Tribute to John Lennon

john_lennon_come_together Canadian singers, Nelly Furtado, Alanis Morissette and Rufus Wainwright are appearing on a tribute DVD called “Come Together: A Night for John Lennon’s Words & Music” to pay respect to the former Beatle.  It was filmed back in 2001, just weeks after the horrific September 11 terrorist attacks and proceeds from the event, which was filmed at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, were donated to the recovery efforts.

The artists were allowed to interpret a Lennon song in any way that they chose - Nelly Furtado sang “Instant Karma with Dave Stewart, Alanis performed “Dear Prudence” and Rufus sang “This Boy” with Sean Lennon and Robert Schwartzman and then “Across the Universe” again with Sean, along with Moby.  Watch that performance now:

The DVD is now on sale and the proceeds will go to the Robin Hood Foundation.  Here’s the list of performances - sounds like a good DVD to buy!

  • John Lennon, Yolanda Williams and Billy Preston — “Imagine”
  • Dave Matthews — “In My Life”
  • Stone Temple Pilots — “Revolution”
  • Alanis Morissette — “Dear Prudence”
  • Moby, Sean Lennon and Rufus Wainwright — “Across The Universe”
  • Cyndi Lauper — “Strawberry Fields Forever”
  • Marc Anthony — “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds”
  • Shelby Lynne — “Mother”
  • Nelly Furtado and Dave Stewart — “Instant Karma”
  • Lou Reed — “Jealous Guy”
  • Natalie Merchant — “Nowhere Man”
  • Kevin Spacey — “Mind Games”
  • Craig David — “Come Together”
  • Sean Lennon and Rufus Wainwright — “This Boy”
  • Sean Lennon — “Julia”
  • Everybody — “Give Peace A Chance” / “Power To The People”

Nickelback "Gotta Be Somebody" #1 on Sirius Iceberg Channel

I have to admit, that I didn’t see this coming!  This new Nickelback some “Gotta Be Somebody” really surprised me.  It’s got a real upbeat, 80s sound to it.  I can’t put my finger on what it sounds like exactly (my mind keeps going to Richard Marx but it’s more than that).

Anyway, people must be liking it because it’s currently #1 on Sirius satellite radio channel “Iceberg 85″ which is devoted to Canadian music.  I couldn’t find a video for it but you can listen to the track here.
