Ryerson University signed an easement agreement with the city of Toronto when it bought the former Sam the Record Man location in 2007. The agreement was meant to preserve the sign and was supposed to be installed on Ryerson’s new Student Learning Centre. However, Ryerson has sought to break this agreement.
On September 10, 2013, council gave Ryerson the option to consider an alternative location for the iconic sign as the original location was argued as technically impossible. The debate will continue in city council on October 8, 2013. In the meantime, a Facebook group has been set up to spread awareness about this sign that is historically important to Canadian music. The letters below were collected by restoration committee member Nicholas Jennings. Check out the facebook page here where more letters of support can be read.
