Interview with Chris Mathis from GALGAMEX

Galgamex is an unsigned ass hauling death metal band from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. They are, plain and simple, “five ass hauling scumbags who love to bring the head bang.” Check out Galgamex‘s myspace for more information on the band including tour dates, videos, and more.

1 First off, introduce yourself and specify what instrument(s) you play in the band.
I am Chris Mathis and I play the old throat hole, and we have Jordan Vandetti on guitar, Dan Stokes on guitar, Ryan Driskoll on drums and Dan Maidana (Crapdog Jackyl) on bass.

2 How long has Galgamex been a band and how did you get in touch with the other members?
The original idea came from Jordan and Driskoll doing free style death metal jams at shows like 2 years ago, then they decided to actually form a real band. They got a singer and bassist who both left in early 2010 then acquired myself and Dan

3 You are known for playing intense sounding metal. What got you into this style of metal and made you want to play it full-time?
Me personally, just listening to metal in general and then getting into more and more brutal sounding stuff. I love the energy and release it provides playing live, theres nothing like it.

4 How has the Internet helped the band?
I think the internet has helped just about every independent band out immensely, its great to be able to reach out to people who would have never heard of your band or checked them out in days of old. The internet is a great tool for bands and you get out what you put in.

5 How do you think your hometown scene compares to other cities you’ve played?
Our home town scene is pretty great, lots of awesome friends and bands who all work together and help each other out. Some bands from Vancouver you should definitely check out are abriosis, ancients, anion, archspire, excruciating pain and nylithia. Theres something here for every type of metal fan.

6 How do you think the Canadian metal scene compares to other countries?
I believe Canada’s underground metal scene is amazing theres so many awesome bands from all over the place like kataplexis, akakor, norris, terrorhorse, the serpent and the siren and endast. Theres so much going on. I think it easily competes with much larger countries.

7 What is your favourite gig that you have ever played?
We just played with Kataklysm, All shall Perish and Conducting from the Grave on March 4th at the Rickshaw and this was an amazing show we were exposed to a lot of people who have never heard of us and were pretty pumped on the band. Also any show we play with Kataplexis is also a great time.

8 Is music your full-time job?
I wish, unfortunately we all have day jobs to pay the bills, maybe one day but thats a very tall order in this day in age in the genre we play.

9 If you could give some advice to aspiring underground musicians in Canada, what would it be?
Practice, promote and have fun!

10 Lastly, what are some of your favourite bands that you have been listening to at the moment?
Me personally belphegor’s newest album, ulcerate, abriosis, rotten sound, and obscura.
